Porter's son, Maxwell, said that he and his brothers forced Porter out of the home when Maxwell was about 17 years old, because of on-going verbal abuse and drinking. This would have been around 1930. Some years earlier, perhaps around 1920, Porter shot and killed his cousin James Johnson, the only son of Mary Catherine Simmons (Johnson), because of an alleged affair with Porter's wife Fannie. Porter was apparently never charged with a crime, under the common law principle of "protecting his home," although family sources say that Porter's father Peter F. spent a great deal of money keeping Porter out of jail. Fannie left with the children sometime after 1930, and eventually moved to Tyler, TX. She never remarried.
